What is Leader+?
LEADER+ is a European Community Initiative for assisting rural
communities in improving the quality of life and economic prosperity in
their local area.
The LEADER+ programme runs from 2000 to 2006, and its aim is to encourage
and support rural actors to think about the longer term potential of their area.
It seeks to encourage the implementation of integrated, high-quality,
original strategies for sustainable development designed to encourage
experimenting with new ways of:
- Enhancing the natural and cultural heritage
- Reinforcing the economic environment, in
order to contribute to job creation
- Improving the organisation abilities of their
community
High priority is accorded to Actions 2 and 3 of LEADER+, by promoting
and supporting inter-group cooperation and networking both within and outside
each EU Member State.
Leader post 2006
The Leader initiative will continue to be part of the EU funded rural
development programmes in the new EU budgetary period 2007-2013. The
selection of local development strategies implemented by local action
groups will be made by managing authorities, following the national or
regional rural development plans and Community legislation
