European Islands and Farm Landscapes – AGRI-ENVIRONMENT ASSESSMENT AND MONITORING

The Islands: The Partners : Who's who

CYPRUS - ENGLAND - IRELAND - MALTA - NETHERLANDS - SCOTLAND - SPAIN - Majorca - SPAIN - Menorca - SWEDEN

Focus on investigating and surveying key species and habitat or landscape features which can be used as indicators to assess the effectiveness of agri-environmental management on island farms and crofts.

Within the framework of the project, each island is invited to make an assessment of the effectiveness of agri-environment schemes in their islands. Effectively the intention is to monitor changes or improvement in biodiversity or landscapes on island farmland where environment schemes are being implemented.

Monitoring could look at a) agri-environment approaches, and b) assessment of success of schemes, using island indicators. Ground nesting birds, small mammals, invertebrates or specific island or coastal habitats will be identified and agreed between partners.

Island farms with existing or historic data will be used wherever possible. At least one Island where Agri-environment schemes were devised at the island or regional level will be included.

Monitoring will also review the role of designated areas such as under national categories including AONBs, National Parks, and landscape reserves, Natura 2000 (SACs), ESAs, and internationally designations such as UNESCO Biosphere Reserves.
