Update July 2006 – The Agriculturist of the project
partner, Larnaca Development Agency visits farms in the area of the
District of Larnaca in prescheduled tours once a week. At his visits he
finds out about any weaknesses and changes that they must be done for
improving the quality and in extent the income. This activity was started
since the end of 2004, in order for the Agriculturist to see the owners of
the farms periodically. Till today he has visited about 30 farms of cows,
40 pigs units, 50 of sheeps and goats and 15 of poultry.

Update July 2006 – Mary Lavelle reports that main focus has been on the Organic Strategy
Group and horticulture. A project coordinator is in the process of being
appointed to work on EIFL. A mission
from the Isle of Wight is being planned for early September. A
bilateral meeting is proposed on Inish Bofin for autumn 2006 with Leader+
Isle of Wight Carol Flux and Graham Drucker, Wight Wildlife.
Update July 2006 -
Expression of Interest to join the network from the RSPB office Isle of
Islay (Argyll and Bute) - an area that is famous for
its whisky and geese. Its prime asset is the RSPB's Loch Gruinart nature
reserve (1,667 hectare). The RSPB runs a farm at Loch Gruinart with 250
suckler cows and 200 sheep. 25 ha of land is used to grow animal feed. The
livestock are vital for the conservation of the site as they maintain the
grassland areas. Top quality calves are also raised on the farm and sold at
sales on the island. The nature reserve and farm is closely integrated with
the local community and is a good way of demonstrating conservation and
agriculture in practice to farmers and advisors both locally and
nationally.
Update October 2006: Supplementary
Cooperation Agreement prepared October 2006. Jack Fleming reports
“Islay is in the process of planning a range of case studies of
farming and nature conservation practices within the Less Favoured Area
designation of Scotland. Forming the
basis of these studies will be the island of Islay although comparative
studies will be made on the islands of Mull, possibly Coll, the Outer Isles
and Orkney. For further comparison
there is likely to be a mainland site selected, probably within the Speyside
area. The case studies will be
founded upon questionnaires (copy of draft attached) that will identify key
habitats and species and the practices, both agricultural and conservation
driven, which may support them”.

Update July 2006 – Graham Drucker reports “We have concentrated on visiting and talking to farmers
and researching about Island Farm Diversification, Island Abbatoirs
and Island Labelling. Chief amongst these include exploring
agri-tourism interests, notably farm accomodation and wildlife enhancement.
This has involved developing a questionaire, involving 3 new volunteers
working in the farming community, and meeting almost 50 farms covering 10%
of the island. The results of our current work will be brought to the next
workshop”.
Since 2005, farm visit questionanire devised. Review and
survey of planning applications for farms (2004-2006). Meetings with UNEP-WCMC
and RSPB re assessment and monitoring, and link to the Convention on
Biological Diversity. Up to 50 farms visited as part of the local Isle of
Wight activities to discuss the Agri-environment schemes, farming and
landscapes, and farm diversification. Covers 10% of island area. Six
volunteers have taken part in the project. Tina Williamson (website), Mark
Russell (website), Jonathan Brown (farm visits), Steve Chapman (farm
visits/monitoring-assessment), Gareth Shelley (Farm access) and Louise Hart
(farm diversification and marketing).

Update July 2006 – Summary from Sue White “I have 3 students with me at the
moment. Dan Eatherly is an MSc student from Exeter University studying
sustainable rural development, he has interviewed 20+ folk about
the potential for agri-tourism in Shetland. Nathalie Pion and Julie Fargier
are both studying agriculture at universities in France and are working
together collecting invertebrate samples and botanical data from different
types of farm/ croft land. I'm interested in looking at whether groups of invertebrates
such as spiders might be indicators of habitat quality and what impact
cattle and cropping have on the assemblages”.
